1 – Get a letter of acceptance
The letter of acceptance is proof to the university that they have registered you as their student. Of course, then you will have to first apply for admission to a French university. After completing the application process, they will send you a letter of acceptance. Based on this letter you are getting a student visa.
A letter of acceptance will be sent, along with all other documents discussed below, to the French embassy in the home country. Make sure you choose a good university to be accepted and know the complete process to apply to study in France.
2 – Determine the section of the Student Visa
There are many categories of visas to enter France such as student visa, tourist visa etc. In these categories, the student visa is further divided into 3 additional categories. All of the sections below are categorized according to the period of your stay in France by courses. Each of these visas has its own objectives and time limits.
Short term student stay
This visa is for those students who travel to France to study certain short courses and will only stay in France for 3 months. No residence permit is required for these visa holders as they will return within three months.
Temporary residence visa
This visa allows students to stay for six months in France. This visa is for those students who have a short course of more than 3 months or less or the equivalent of 6 months or an exchange semester at a French university. If you are applying for this visa, you will also need to apply for a residence permit in France.
Long-term residence visa
This visa allows students to stay in France until the end of their studies. Bachelor’s course in France lasts for about three years, Masters’ 2 years and PhD 4 years. This visa applies to all these programs. That is why you will need to submit a letter of acceptance from the university with full details of your study plan. Another good thing about this visa is that you do not need a residence permit.
3 – Compile the Required Document Visa for a French Student Visa
Once you have received the letter of acceptance and decided on your visa category, you will need to start collecting the documents required by the ambassador before issuing a student visa.

- Original passport with at least two valid visa pages. Must be valid for at least three additional months from the date of travel.
- All previous passports whether used for travel or not. For lost or stolen passports, a police report on the English translation
- Two passport size photographs
- Letter of acceptance from the university
- Copies of textbooks
- Bank statement as proof that you can cover your expenses while living in France (approximately 615 EUR per month)
- Airline ticket or booking indicating departure date
- Medical insurance with a minimum cover of EUR 30,000.
- Proof of accommodation planning in France
- Certificate of Language Performance (English / French)
- Proof of payment of visa fees
When to apply?
It is recommended to schedule an appointment as soon as you receive your letter of acceptance from the university. The more you apply, the easier it will be for you, especially if an error or problem arises. However, your visa appointment should not be earlier than 90 days of your date to go to France.
